The Ames Public Library expanded to meet community needs for a larger space.
The Ames Public Library opened in 1904. Since then, it has had four additions in 1907, 1938, 1985, and 2011. It has the distinction of being a library that has remained in its original location since its opening. Now standing at an impressive 79,000 square feet, the Ames Public Library has amenities like:

- eight study rooms of varying sizes
- an automated check-in system
- a BookMobile
- a large children's space with a separate designated storytime and activity room

- an Idea Center media room with equipment and technology available for patron access
- a permanent Friends of the Library bookstore and coffee area

- low shelves for easier patron access and improved librarian sightlines
- large, clear signage directing patrons to sections
- RFID tags in all materials

- a Friends of the Library Foundation that assists in book and coffee store maintenance, summer meal assistance, programming, and more
- a "Wall of Wow!" tactile and fine motor skill wall for children
- a robust volunteer system that assist with shelving, withdrawing, running inventory, and book deliveries
